30/1/2012 ‘EASTERN SHOCK (for Magor)’ tracklist

An alternative title, ‘Sounds Of Freedom’, would have been appropriate for this week’s show, but, without checking, I’m pretty sure this has already been used on more than one occasion, almost certainly in connection with reggae.  So ‘Eastern Shock’, a not particularly subtle piece of wordplay, was used as appellation for a collection of sounds from the countries of the former Eastern Bloc.                                                                                                                                                                                                        The dedication to Ivan Martin Jirous, aka Magor (Louse), the poet and driving force behind the underground rock scene in Czechoslovakia, who passed away late last year, should be extended to all those who strove for freedom and freedom of artistic expression under the totalitarian regimes of Central and Eastern Europe, including the members of the Jazz Section, about whom the recently-departed author, Josef Skvorecky, wrote the following back in 1988:                                                          http://www.nybooks.com/articles/archives/1988/jun/30/jamming-the-jazz-section/?pagination=false          Magor and the band who he supported, managed and, despite the attempts of the communist authorities, organized concerts for, the Plastic People Of The Universe, kicked off proceedings:

That ‘dobrou noc’ from Magor seemed an appropriate way to bring the show to a close. I regret that there wasn’t time for a more informative programme, with regards to the struggle for artistic expression and persecution faced by artists under communism. These have been documented better than I could dream of by others who lived through the struggle and saw the overthrow of the totalitarian regimes at the end of the 80’s. Not even twenty-five years ago. Change has come fast, not all of it good – the freedom available for expression also provides an open field for greed and corruption – something which has disillusioned many who dreamt of life after communism. But at least now there is freedom to express and protest and make some cracking good music, as I hope was demonstrated briefly in the tracks played.             Thanks this time to a few people – to Miss aka for introducing me to the work of the good people at easterndaze and audiotong, to Deceased Squirrel On The Phone, Dr Hexen and Mr Brutal of Hexenbrutal, and Mito of SKM Banda – all whose help is much-appreciated.

From a bright but rather chill Brno – wish you many a sonic wonder, Shiny.
