A Stetson Skeleton + 11/6/2011 ‘Lone Star Sonics’ tracklist

For a long time what I’m about to write was a secret, something of a skeleton in a spike-adorned cupboard. The first artist I saw live wore not a ripped shirt or bondage trousers, but a Stetson. It was at the Gaumont in Ipswich and the man in question, supporting Merle Haggard, was Joe Ely. Even though he formed a friendship and toured with The Clash soon after, in the interest of protecting punk credentials, I kept this under my invisible headgear for many years. Less than nine months later I was at the same venue, watching the man credited with inventing the ripped t-shirt, Richard Hell, performing with his Voidoids on a bill with Elvis Costello and John Cooper-Clarke. But yes, the fact that my first live concert featured a  resident of the Lone Star State, playing honky tonk and country rock, remained a secret.
Joe Ely didn’t feature on this week’s show, devoted to music from his home state. In the interests of diversity, he, along with other alt-country artists who I might have included, were left out of the sixty-odd minute mix. Hopefully, the following provided a reasonable glimpse of the varied sounds emanating from Texas, beginning with a  man who wore a Stetson….

With that mellow electronica, the week’s sonic sojourn in Texas came to an end. And with time limited, I have to bring this to a close. Anyone with sonic secrets to share, I’m all ears (and eyes)!

Til next time, S.
