26/11/2012 ‘Small Wonders’ & 3/12/2012 ‘Sonic Sisterhood’ tracklists

To say it’s high time I detailed the contents of the last two shows is an understatement. I don’t imagine there’s been a biting of fingernails or pulling out of hair by a frustrated throng of listeners, although, as I write this, winter-pale, spiky-haired cartoon figures sitting in impressively cluttered bedrooms do come to mind. I’m not sure if this imagery is a result of currently listening to Minutemen’s opus magnum ‘Double Nickels On The Dime’…..
On to the tracklists. Firstly that of ‘Small Wonders’, a show which took it’s name from the label Pete Stennet set up in Walthamstow in 1977, and which focussed on three present day independent labels; Pino Montecalvo’s Bari label Music a la Coque, Markus Detmer’s Staubgold, and Ian Ilavsky and Don Wilkie’s Constellation Records.
First of all, it was work released by Music a la Coque…

On to this week’s ‘Sonic Sisterhood’ tracks; a dozen delights (in at least one person’s opinion!) by female artists, starting with, well, I couldn’t resist (though I did debate including ‘Kimberley’ instead), the unique talents of –

11)NINA SIMONE – LITTLE GIRL BLUE /from ‘Little Girl Blue’/ Bethlehem 1957, Motif 2009

12)MARISSA NADLER – ANNABELLE LEE /from ‘Ballads Of Living And Dying’/ Beautiful Happiness 2004
More info: http://marissanadler.com/

The haunting sound of Marissa Nadler’s adaptation of the Edgar Allen Poe poem brought the 60 minutes of Sonic Sisterhood to an end. Due to time constraints, pieces by the following artists had to be cut: Stereolab (Jenny Ondioline), Teenage Jesus & the Jerks (Baby Doll), and Joni Mitchell (Amelia or Don Juan’s Reckless Daughter). Hopefully, the final dozen proved suitably diverse.
Before wrapping this up, I should thank Pino Montecalvo of  the Music a la Coque label for all his help – much-appreciated!
Until next time, wish anyone reading this many a sonic delight – S.
