8/4/2013 ‘1978’ tracklist

When was the birth of punk, when post-punk? If The Stooges presented the first genuine punk outburst to startled audiences in Detroit in 1967, then who were the progenitors when it came to post-punk? The term only coined by journalists late in 1977, but what was the music emanating from the small mid-70’s scene in Cleveland – if Pere Ubu‘s first albums are post-punk, then surely their 1975 single ’30 Seconds Over Tokyo’ should be considered of the same genre?
Enough questions to chew over for a good while, and this without bringing various 60’s garage bands scattered around the globe into the mix. For the purposes of last night’s sonic journey on The Kitchen Sink, the premise that 1976 was punk’s Year Zero was adopted; using this, then 1978 can be seen as the year when post-punk first raised its multi-snaked head and laid it on vinyl. Music as Medusa – I won’t attempt to stretch the analogy….
Narrowing the music down to fit within the confines of a 60-minute show proved nigh on impossible. 1978 saw not only the wild diversifying of the new wave of bands, but also the last of the original class of ’76 finally releasing albums. The marvellous ‘Crossing The Red Sea With The Adverts‘ gave me the idea for the focus, yet come the final cut (the hardest!), there was no space for a sample of its pleasures. Obviously, a follow-up  programme, featuring TV Smith’s outfit, is required. I could have left out the sample of Chennai psych-funk from Ilaiyaraaja, but wanted to exhibit a little of the diversity the show revels in. Donna Summer‘s ‘MacarthurPark Suite’, though worthy, was a mite lengthy for inclusion. At least ten minutes too long.
Without further rumination and waffling, on to the 14 delights which were aired, starting with a track which mentions ‘the kitchen sink’ possibly more than any other:

The sound which no lesser figure than David Bowie called ‘The Soundtrack of the ’80’s’ brought an all too brief visit to 1978 to a close. I’m sure it won’t be long before another cracker from that year makes it onto the TKS tracklist, and a second focus is a definite possibility.
For now, wishing anyone perusing this many a sonic delight! S.
