6/5/2013 ‘Interiors’ tracklist

After an admittedly  fairly brief search for tracks connected to the subject of furniture and other furnishings, what appears evident is that those of a downbeat nature are more than prevalent. For every sunny offering such as Yo La Tengo‘s Beanbag Chair, there are half a dozen dwelling in a veritable aural valley of despond. Fugazi asked ‘how many times have you felt like a bookcase/sitting in a living-room gathering dust’, while Blind Uncle Gaspard, sitting at the window of his room, sings ‘I watch you go away, that is all I can do my darling.’ Even Big Walter Price, in one of the minority of songs about enjoying the comforts of being in bed, ‘Breakfast in Bed’, has to ask his honey to take his scrambled eggs (or coffee?) back because it’s ‘got a roach in it’; at least Big Walter obviously gets pleasure from having his toast buttered on both sides, in ‘Empty Bed Blues’Bessie Smith can only bemoan waking up alone with an awful aching head after her new man, ‘a deep sea diver with a stroke that can’t go wrong’,  leaves her. Whether Bessie’s bed was a double isn’t clear, what is obvious is the wealth of  delightful double entendres which fill her verses, showing once again that when it comes to risque lyrics, those produced in the 1920’s and early 30’s are tough to match…..’Oh he boiled my cabbage and he made it awful hot/…/ but when he slipped the bacon in he overflowed the pot’ indeed!
After much pondering, during which it was decided that, despite it’s merits, Lou Reed‘s ‘The Bed’, with it’s ‘odd and fateful night’, would probably prove a step too far, the following dozen tracks were chosen for broadcast:

The last track on Television‘s classic 1977 debut seemed a fitting finale to an all-t00-brief foray into music somehow connected to furniture and other furnishings. Overall, still a tad downbeat, but reasonably diverse.
Reading  those Bessie Smith lyrics, with their cabbage and bacon and coffee, have a certain stomach grumbling, so it’s time to bring this to a close and attend to its complaints. Til next time, wish you many a delicious sonic experience, S.
