5/5/2014 TKS Presents: ‘Elles’ tracklist

The opening pair of tracks on this week’s sonic sixty minutes had me pondering the number of people who might be rolling their eyes up or muttering in disgust at one or the other. It’s likely that the majority of fans of country music wouldn’t listen to more than a few seconds of noise, while many connoisseurs of the latter would no doubt react similarly to a slice of country; admittedly, with the majority of tracks played on country radio stations in North America, my reaction would mirror theirs – memories of being inflicted with someone singing ‘Saddam Hussein will sleep in a big warm bed tonight, but I won’t’ or something very similar!
One artist who is definitely a fan of both musical forms is Carla Bozulich, who faithfully covered the whole of Willie Nelson‘s ‘Red Headed Stranger’ album, with contributions by Nelson himself on three tracks, in 2003. Bozulich’ song ‘Winds of St. Anne’ could well have been included in the ‘Elles’ mix, while the pioneer of ‘outlaw country’ did make the cut alongside fellow Texan Townes Van Zandt.
