8/12/2014 TKS Presents: ‘Apache Beat’ tracklist

The last live show of 2014 featured examples of what Klaus Dinger of Neu! and La Dusseldorf called the ‘Apache beat’, but which is more commonly known as the ‘Motorik’, 4/4, sounds heading not for a bridge, but down the highway with no end in sight (Europe Endless, or America Endless, or, stretching the imagination somewhat, UK Endless!), just keep on driving…….Considering it’s popular perception, largely based on Kraftwerk‘s ‘Autobahn’, as sounds connected to transport and, as just mentioned, driving, it might come as a surprise that the beat originally reflected the passion Dinger, Michael Rother, and Florian Schneider  of Kraftwerk shared – football! According to Rother, the beat was one to run to, down a football pitch, not down the autobahn….
Along with some classic examples of the 4/4 beat, the sixty-minute sonic journey on The Kitchen Sink also featured examples of the fledgeling sound and its being harnessed alongside other beats….Where else could we start other than in Germany?

I could have chosen from several tracks on Japanese outfit Boredoms album, or something from their ‘Super Ae’ work, but the fourth track got the nod. Similarly, the piece by Jah Wobble was included rather than ‘Chant’ by his old oufit P.I.L, both containing stretches of 4/4 alongside other beats.  Of course, I would have been happy to have played 60 minutes of Neu!, but ‘Hallogallo’ provides one huge fix in that department.

Barring the wholly unforeseen, The Kitchen Sink will be back with a selection of the sonic highlights of 2014 early next year. Til then, wishing anyone reading this a wonderful festive season filled with joys and sonic delights! S.

The Kitchen Sink broadcasts (almost) every Monday at 10 p.m C.E.T on Brno student/community radio station http://www.radior.cz
