25/5/2015 TKS Presents: ‘London Is the Place For Me’ tracklist

Despite the title, courtesy of Lord Kitchener, there was no calypso on this week’s sonic soiree on The Kitchen Sink. However, the focus on artists from and drawn to the city referred to as The Smoke did contain a musical mix including jit, reggae, music hall psychedelia, post-punk and more. Always good to start with a ear-cleansing blast….

12)The Kinks – Waterloo Sunset /from ‘Something Else’/ Pye Records 1967

I know that TKS endeavours to play sounds which won’t often be heard on commercial radio, but couldn’t resist playing Waterloo Sunset, certainly one of the best, if not the best (which it is according to Time Out), song about London. It was also voted #42 on the Rolling Stone  ‘500 Greatest Songs Of All Time’ list, which makes it all the more perplexing as to why it didn’t even dent the charts in the U.S when released as a single there. A classic.
When introducing the track by The Slits, it appears I inadvertently perpetuated the story that Ari Up met Palmolive at a Patti Smith concert – according to the interview in Pitchfork (link above), the two in fact met at a gig by The Clash.
Thanks this time are due to Koichi Yamanoha, aka Grimm Grimm, for the title track from his album ‘Hazy Eyes Maybe’, due for release toward the end of next month.
Til next time, wishing you all many a sonic delight, S.
