19/12/2016 ‘The Kitchen Sink Plays Loose’ tracklist

‘On the first day of Christmas my true love sent to me
a partridge in a pear tree…’

A partridge in a pear tree? A partridge – why not Andy Partridge, and, instead of a pear tree – XTC?! And so began a not particularly successful quest to find tracks for a sonic focus based on the old cumulative carol, with some links being as tenuous as certain politicians promises and loose as clowns’ britches……..

  1. A partridge in a pear tree: XTC – Science Friction
  2. Two turtle doves: Syd Barrett – Terrapin   (perhaps the loosest link?!)
  3. Three French Hens: Roy Pope – Cacklin’ Hen
  4.  Four Calling Birds or Colly Birds: Steel Pulse – Macka Splaff (including the colly man in its lyrics)
  5. Five Gold Rings: OOIOO – Sizuku Ring Neng (one ring in the title, four more in OOIOO!)
  6. Six Geese a-Laying: Huun-Huur-Tu – Tuvan Internationale (nothing in the title or band name linked to those geese, so extra information was required, this being that I  saw the band perform at Brno’s Husa na provazku (Goose On A String) theatre. This makes the Terrapin link to turtle doves seem comparatively obvious…).
  7. Seven Swans a-Swimming: Swans – The Golden Boy That Was Swallowed By The Sea
  8. Eight Maids a-Milking: Joanna Newsom – Bridges And Balloons (from ‘The Milk-Eyed Mender’)
  9. Nine Ladies Dancing: Happy Hayseeds – Ladies Quadrille
  10.  Ten Lords a-Leaping: The Stooges – Loose (one punk-lord in Iggy Pop, who does more than his share of leaping about on stage…)
  11. Eleven Pipers Piping: Master Musicians of Jajouka – I Am Calling Out (from ‘Brian Jones Presents The Pipes Of Pan At Jajouka’)
  12. Twelve Drummers Drumming: Bongos Ikwue And The Groovies – Otachikpokpo (Bongos representing those dozen drummers….)It is to be hoped that noone listening to the live broadcast tried to fathom out the theme of the show, an endeavour which might have provoked some head-scratching or shaking and more than a few exasperated mutterings. To make up for any stress caused by what had gone before, the programme concluded with a festive treat from Deerborn, Michigan:
  13. Windy & Carl – Christmas SongThat gem, released as a free download for the festive season, brought proceedings on the last TKS of 2016 to a close……
Wishing anyone perusing this many a sonic delight, S.The Kitchen Sink broadcasts on Brno student/community radio station http://www.radior.cz most Mondays at 22.05 C.E.T
